Will Malware Cut You from the Internet on Monday?

Are you safe? Many people are unaware of this malware that might be on your computer since as early as last year. Many internet service providers as well as Google and Facebook are warning users but there are still thousands all over the world that are unknowingly affected.

What kind of malware is it?

Over a year ago, international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of more than 570,000 computers all over the world. The FBI tried to take down the hackers last year, but when they found out if they tried to turn off the malware servers, those infected computers would lose their internet service.

To counteract this, the FBI bought a private company to install two clean internet servers to take over for the malicious servers so no one would lose their Internet. However, this solution is about to shut down on Monday July 9.

You may be one of the victims unknowingly affected by this malware. Some symptoms include slow web surfing and disabled antivirus software.

Many of the Internet world is trying to get involved and reach out to spread awareness. For example But popular social networking sites and Internet providers have gotten more involved, reaching out to computer users to warn of the problem. For example Facebook and Google have created their own warning messages that pops up if it notices that a computer might be infected. Facebook posts this prompt, “Your computer or network might be infected,” along with a link. While Google displays the message on top of their search result page. As such, if you have seen this, act quickly to fix your computer.

A lot of the Internet provides are trying to come up with solutions that they can put in place to correct the problem or provide information to customers whose internet suddenly stops. Although this problem corrects the lack of internet, the malware still will remain on the computer which might cause future problems.

Even if you think you are safe because your computer is a part of a corporation, think again. There are 50 Fortune 500 companies that are still infected with this malware.

If you don’t use Facebook or Google or even just to double-check to make sure. You can check to see if your computer is infected by visiting a website run by a group brought in by the FBI to counter the malware: http://www.dcwg.org.
