With the objective of making sure that Canada’s urban and rural communities get equal access to digital communications services, Canadian government favors new wireless entrants over the incumbent operators, like Rogers.
As one of Canada’s largest incumbent wireless operators, Rogers has direct interest in convincing the government not to favor new entrants. The government has made it a priority to foster competition in the sector to help bring down the country’s relatively high fees for mobile services. Canada wants to lift foreign ownership rules for telecom companies. One option would be for it to lift the rules only for new entrants to give them access to more financing to better compete against the incumbents.
